ROSALIND There is none of my uncle's marks upon you: he taught me how to know a man in love; in which cage of rushes I am sure you are not prisoner.

the masks I wear, rarely removed, always surprise; the scars I bear make fools of naked eyes.

And who is the mask for? The wearer or the watcher? Who is being protected?

masks are for whomever feels a need for them, even if the need is only due to internal ideas/fear unsupported by experience... as for mine, they are for play more than protection... despite my occasionally apparent irreverent bravado or cavalier confidence, they melt away the moment life gets real, the moment someone withot a mask looks into my eyes (being that vulnerable can be unsafe in this world for anyone, wearer and watcher alike)... and the irony of the timing of this question (or this response) is, in the background, my roommate is in the living room watching Vanilla Sky... and the radio I am listening to plays Linda Ronstadt singing the Eagles "Prisoner In Disguise"... life offers connected in so many ways if we're only alert to them...
