to make a long war

tonight I am high on narcotics and hearing Arlo singing coming into Los Angeles, flashing back to another war (that was not called a war at the time because, of course, nobody ever actually declared war on anybody) and remembering what it was like not to care about anything except the laughter inside and the party all around and the people, strangers mostly, who were acting strange (the ones who were floating above the many corpses sprawled out everywhere, as far as the eyes could see... seeing rainbows in the puddles and art in the clouds)

to make a war, or an incident, last a long time, you need drugs... powerful drugs... lots of drugs... that way people don't care... people in foxholes play war games... people at home vegetate... you also need a thriving economy so people at home who are not into drugs can justify the war to themselve because they are making a lot of money... you also need despair and apathy and boredom, so rallying around defeating an enemy can appeal to masses who are wandering aimlessly through life wondering when the excitement and meaning will arrive... you also need ignorance, a lot of ignorance... so questions can be answered with double-talk and rhetoric and complicated jargon that means nothing, but sounds impressive...

are those ingredients around today?
